The tradition keeps on rolling:
For the 32nd straight year, the Hibbing Raceway will be hosting one of the
most prestigious and highest paying specials of the racing season. Rivaled
in tradition by very few events, the Labor Day Shootout winners' list reads
like a who's who in the history of WISSOTA racing. National Hall of Fame
drivers Tom Nesbitt, Rick Aukland, and Pete Parker headline the list of greats
to roll their cars into Hibbing Raceway victory lane.

Unbeatable format:
A format loved by drivers and fans alike, the Labor Day Shootout features
two complete programs on Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend. With the
combination of the format, coupled with the fantastic payout, more drivers
leave the Hibbing Raceway with positive race winnings than any other race
on the calendar.

Labour Day isn't all about America:
Labor Day is also a Canadian holiday and because of this fact, very few
races host as many "neighbors to the north" as the Labor Day Shootout.
After taking a trip through the camping areas, it may appear to some as
though the event was actually being held in Canada. The inclusion of so
many Canadian fans and drivers helps make the event as special as it is.

Car counts over the years:
In past years, the Labor Day Shootout has hosted over 180 cars in just 3
classes . In recent years, many other tracks have held races on Labor Day
weekend which has somewhat cut into the car counts of the Shootout but the
fact remains the most prestigious and coveted race of the weekend is in
Hibbing. Still, nearly 150 cars are expected in the three divisions and
many of the top drivers of WISSOTA will be on hand.

The Shootout is more than just a race:
While there would be no Labor Day Shootout without the racing, the
extracurricular activities are also a large draw for fans. The
campgrounds begin filling up early in the week as campers hustle to grab
prime spots among the local college grounds. The Saturday program features
live entertainment in the Beer Gardens under the grandstands along with a
series of vendors working after hours. Anywhere in between there and the
pits, you can find friendly folks gathering at various camp areas
throughout the premises.

For some, it's in the blood:
Family is a large part of dirt track racing around the country and that is
certainly the case in Hibbing. Some families can even share the experiences
of a Labor Day Shootout win together. Steve Laursen and Brent Laursen were
the first brother tandem to break into victory lane. Steve got his first
Shootout title in 1986 while Brent scored his in 1990. The next year the
Egerdorfs one-upped the Laursens by both winning in the same year. Rick and
Steve Egersdorf both won Late Model titles in 1991. Since then, the
Jensen's have joined the "Sibling Shootout Club" when Joey followed up
brother Brandon's 2003 Super Stock win with a dominant Modified performance
in 2006. Only one father/son combination has been able to share the
experiences of a Labor Day Shootout win. Northern racing legend Billy
Nelson and his son Darrell both celebrated in Hibbing Raceway victory lane.
Second generation drivers like Derek Vesel and Zach Wohlers will have the
opportunity to join that elite list as both of their fathers already hold
multiple titles.

Dual threats:
As a driver, very few things prove your driving prowess quite like winning
in multiple classes. There have been a handful of drivers to accomplish
that feat at the Shootout. The first driver on record to etch his names in
the history books as a multi-class winner was Steve Vesel. By winning
the Late Model portion in 2007, it boosted his status to only the second 3
class winner in the history of the event. Wisconsin hotshot Pat Doar was the first
driver to hold the "triple threat" distinction. Other drivers to win the event in two
different classes include Rick Aukland, Pete Wohlers, and Darrell Nelson,
and Rick Egersdorf.

One is not enough:
To win one Labor Day Shootout feature is a special accomplishment but
for several drivers, one victory lane trip required a return visit.... or in
some cases, several return visits. Topping the list of Labor Day Shootout
winners is Ryan Aho. Aho has won 7 Labor Day Shootout features since
1996 with the most recent coming in 2006. Rick Egersdorf sits second on
the list with 6 titles. Several other drivers have won multiple races like
Rick Aukland, Tom Nesbitt, Ron Jones, Steve Laursen, Joey Jensen,
Harry Hanson, Kelly Estey, Pete Wohlers, Jay Kintner, Jeff Tardy, Pat Doar,
Darrell Nelson, Dave Cain, Steve Vesel, Mike Goodremote, Mitch Johnson,
Brad Hanson, and Joel Cryderman.

That doesn't smell like racing fuel:
With the long days of racing at the Shootout, it's important to keep both
the race car and crew fueled. Because of this, barbecue grills are a
necessary piece of equipment on the racing parts checklist for many of the
race teams in attendance. With all the grilling going on over the course of a
race program, one could mistake the pit area for the Great American BBQ
Festival if not for the race cars and haulers packing the pits. Some teams
even consider their chefs and grill masters as critical to the weekend as
those working on the cars.
